This is an excerpt from Paul Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed. He speaks about the banking concept of education that is most prevalent in our education system (from the oppresser), where the students/learners are treated as knowledge banks whose deposits have been made by the teacher. This approach is oppressive and alienating. I use Freire's work to help frame my critique of the postgraduate research training pedagogies in our univerties which most times apply a banking approach and students imagination and connectedness with their own learning is stiffled.
